WOMEN PRINTS AND MULTIPLES
Many outstanding printmakers of the interwar and post-war periods were female. In Polish, the word "graficzki", which stands for female printmakers, may be ambiguous or misleading (as it can bring to mind small-scale prints), but it refers to a group of remarkable female artists who used the graphic medium.
Was there any particular reason why women expressed themselves so well through this medium? Was there something in the very meticulous process of making prints that caused such an outburst of female genius in the field? Was it the small form that allowed women to speak more boldly, as if feeling that this "petite" medium was particularly made for them? Or maybe they chose some specific themes more willingly in order to express matters important to them through this medium?
It is difficult to find one answer to any of these questions, but it is worth looking for them when admiring remarkable works created by outstanding female printmakers: Zofia Stankiewicz, Aniela Cukierówna, Janina Konarska, Leonia Nadelman, Wanda Gołkowska, Danuta Leszczyńska-Kluza, or Magdalena Abakanowicz.
The works by Polish female printmakers, who were also outstanding artists, still seem to be underappreciated on the Polish market. Considering the high quality of the works, it is difficult to expect anything other than an increase in the prices of prints by Polish women.
