Fervency and Expressionism

This auction is another attempt to look at a particularly interesting period of the 1980s in Polish art. Following the auctions devoted to specific subjects, such as the activities of the Gruppa formation, new figuration movement, or a decade of rebellion, we offer a collection of works that present how significant and diverse the expressionist art was in the 1980s.

Our aim is to present how the selected artists of the aforementioned decade understood and defined this concept, as well as how their art evolved in the subsequent decades. The set point is iconic art by such artists as Edward Dwurnik, whose works included in our offer come from three different series, as well as Tomasz Tatarczyk, Eugeniusz Markowski, Sławomir Ratajski, Paweł Kowalewski, Jarosław Modzelewski, or Ryszard Grzyb.

The auction is also a very interesting opportunity to get acquainted with the works of male and female artists who are now being rediscovered, such as Jan Tyniec, Małgorzata Turewicz-Lafranchi, or Marek Kamieński. You will have a chance to see works by artists associated with the Polish underground movements, for instance, the Orange Alternative. In addition, the auction offer will be enriched by the artworks created under the evident influence of pop-art, for example, huge canvases by Andrzej Cisowski or Janusz Przybylski.

Undoubtedly, the auction offer is remarkably diverse, powerful, full of colors, emotions, and dedication. Thereby, the selected works display the characteristic features of expressionism, such as idiosyncratically understood figurativism, ludicism, references to pop culture, panache and anarchy reflected in rejecting all the principles of creating art. The formal layer of the works is characterized by the use of wide impasto, sharp color contrasts, large formats, and experimenting with material, which illustrates the fervent spiritual state indicative of the times when they were created.
