Nikifor, the most prominent representative of “naïve art,” left a lasting imprint on Dwurnik’s painting style – particularly in his use of color and urban subject matter, which held a special place in Dwurnik’s practice. A turning point in Dwurnik’s artistic journey came in the summer of 1965, when he first encountered Nikifor’s work at an exhibition in Kielce. This moment had a profound impact on the development of Dwurnik’s own visual language, which over time grew into a distinct and recognizable form.
The auction will feature works from eleven of Dwurnik’s painting cycles, including “Hitchhiking Travels” – a 1966 series portraying bird’s-eye views of cities – and “Sportsmen”, a satirical series depicting caricatured figures from communist-era Poland, ironically presented as sporty everymen. Another key series is “Workers”, where Dwurnik’s 1980s paintings became more dramatic and politically charged, portraying Poland’s struggle against the authoritarian system. The auction will also showcase works from the following series: “Warsaw”, “The Twenty-Third”, “Counting Rhyme”, “The Twenty-Fifth”, “Spring”, “In the Shadow of Buildings”, Cycle "25”, and Cycle "28”.
