As part of a special auction of collections, we are pleased to offer works from a unique collection of Polish paintings in London. The collection, which has been consistently built up over decades since the 1970s, is an extremely coherent collection of 19th-century and early 20th-century Polish painting, in which the Munich School plays a major role. The capital of Bavaria, to which many Poles fled after the repressions of the partitioning powers following the January Uprising, was one of the most important artistic centres of that century. The collection includes high-quality works by the most important painters from this circle: Józef Brandt, Alfred Wierusz-Kowalski, Józef Chełmoński and Stanisław Witkiewicz, who gained great recognition among collectors and enjoyed international careers during their lifetimes. Also noteworthy are works from the early 19th century, in particular Horace Vernet's painting ‘Interior of an Old Castle Used as a Stable by Poles Joining the Army’, exhibited at the Paris Salon. Vernet was one of the most famous battle painters of the period, working for the French government, whose work influenced many Polish painters. We also present a work by another of his students, January Suchodolski. Patriotic themes, images of the January Uprising and episodes from the Napoleonic Wars, in which Poles played an important role, were key factors in the creation of the presented collection. The offer is further expanded by works inspired by the world of the South and the Middle East: Władysław Czachórski's ‘Neapolitan Woman’, Wilhelm Kotarbiński's sketch for ‘Roman Orgy’, exhibited at the Paris Salon, "Landscape from Palestine. View of Bethel‘ by Jan Styka, and ’Fatima" by his son, Tadeusz Styka. The collection is rounded off by works by modernists: Jacek Malczewski, Julian Fałat and Władysław Jarocki.
