Color, Line and Nude – Art of Natalia Fundowicz
The Sopot Young Art Auction, as every year, will captivate with its rich and diverse choice of works. In the latest selection, we have the pleasure of presenting the most prominent names in young art, including Natalia Fundowicz. The artist is a graduate of the Painting Department at the Academy of Fine Arts in Krakow. She creates subtle and colorful nudes that border on abstraction. In our recent conversation, we touched on topics that shed light on her creative profile and the symbolism of her paintings.
Paulina Brol: What is your main source of inspiration?
Natalia Fundowicz: I find inspiration in everything that surrounds me, especially the female body and old nude photographs. Biological forms, nature, and its fluidity. Music always accompanies me during the creative process, often setting the pace, expression, and rhythm of the work.
PB: When did you start creating?
NF: I fully immersed myself in art during my studies, around 2012. My artistic journey began with surrealist drawings in school notebooks. I was more interested in that than focusing on my teachers. Later, I prepared to enroll into the Academy of Fine Arts, and once I got there, I felt at home. Since then, it has become my way of life. I couldn't imagine life without creating.
PB: What did your creative path look like after graduation?
NF: I graduated in painting from the Academy of Fine Arts in Krakow in 2017. After that, I participated in many collective exhibitions in Poland and several solo exhibitions, including abroad.
PB: Could you tell us more about your technique and creative process?
NF: I usually start with inspiration from a photograph. During my studies, I created art by observing models. I search for old nude photos because they have a very interesting atmosphere. The poses remind me of sculptures. I look for something unique that captures my attention. It could be an emotion or a dynamic posture, movement, or gesture. Then, I create the image very intuitively, always listening to music, often singing or dancing.
PB: What are your biggest artistic dreams?
NF: I think my dream as an artist is to have a large studio of my own and create in various parts of the world. I've always wanted to paint in harmony with myself, freely and with a sense of freedom.
PB: And finally, whose art is the greatest inspiration to you?
NF: I've always admired the works of expressionists - Franz Kline and Teresa Pągowska. Recently, I've been greatly impressed by the paintings of Helen Frankenthaler. The writings and art of Wassily Kandinsky are also very significant to me. Thanks to his books, I found answers to the questions that troubled me and discovered a language through which I can name what I feel, what I think.
