About Department

The École de Paris auctions present works by Polish painters working in Paris at the beginning of the 20th century. The circle of the so-called Paris School was built upon social relations, a network of art dealers, galleries and critics of the left-bank part of Paris. These connections created an international artistic bohemia - a kind of artistic colony existing initially on the hills of Montmartre and then Montparnasse.

Today, when talking about the École de Paris circles, we mention about 150 names. In fact, there were thousands of artists coming to the French capital. The auctions present works by numerous artists who actively contributed to the creation of the Montparnasse art scene in the first decades of the 20th century. The works of the following artists enjoy great interest: Zygmunt Menkes, Eugeniusz Zak, Mela Muter, Henryk Hayden and Mojżesz Kisling.

One of the most important founders of the Paris School was Mojżesz Kisling, known as the “Prince of Montparanasse”. There was a time when the artist enjoyed greater popularity in France than Picasso. Not only the French tabloids wrote about his drunken excesses, but the painter was also a regular in Vogue's social column. The Paris Bohemia including: Pablo Picasso, Diego Rivera, Charlie Chaplin, Marc Chagall, Ernest Hemingway, Henry Miller and Amedeo Modigliani visited his studio.

Polish artists associated with École de Paris were discovered mainly in the 1990s and at the beginning of the 21st century. Only then did they become the object of interest of collectors and the art market, as well as the scientific history of art.
